Nuclear Waste Directive shall be amended – NGO statement submitted in the consultation

Currently, the European Commission invites opinions in preparation of the revision of the Nuclear Waste Directive 2011/70/Euratom which is key not only for nuclear waste management, but also for EU taxonomy rules.

The Joint Project submitted a statement that was supported by 12 NGOs.

In this statement, we gave suggestions for improvement of the Nuclear Waste Directive based on our monitoring of its implementation since it came into force. We commented on the scope of the Directive, on transparency and public participation issues, on costs and financing, on problems with long-term interim storage, on long-term stewardship, retrievability and recoverability of nuclear waste, and on shared solutions.
