The EC consults on its SMR Strategy

2025-12-04

The European Commission (EC) plans to adopt in the first quarter of 2026 a strategy to frame its policies relevant for the development and deployment of the so-called Small Modular Reactors (SMR) in Europe, envisaged in the form of a Commission Communication. A consultation was open until 4 Dec 2025.

The EC gives the following reasons to support SMR development: improving the competitiveness of the EU economy, the EU ambition to become carbon-neutral by 2050, and the EU work to phase out energy imports from Russia. But when looking at recent developments, clearly the most reliable, cheapest and easily deployable sources are
renewables.
