NPP Paks site: risk of flooding?

2024-12-20

Heavy rainfall brought by storm “Boris” has left devastating marks on central Europe in September 2024. The storm caused extreme flooding, and the region around the Paks nuclear power plant in central Hungary was also affected by high water levels.

Expert Oda Becker reviewed the flood risk for Paks. She concluded that even though the NPP was assessed to be protected against flooding in the 2011 stress test, these analyses should be repeated regularly, taking into regard the NPP planned lifetime extension and the rising risk for extreme weather events. Furthermore, it must be ensured that the floodplains and altitudes of the surrounding areas from 2011 will remain stable in the long-term.
